Brachioplasty / Arm Lift Surgery
Brachioplasty (or Arm Lift Surgery) procedure attempts to procure a more natural and youthful look by removing the fat and excess skin hanging down from the underarms. This is more commonly seen in women, but can also occur in men who have lost significant weight.
The incision is made beneath the arm and can extend from the elbow to the armpit, depending on how much skin must be removed. However, most patients are satisfied with the results and believe trading “skin for scars” is worthwhile, especially when scars are efficiently hidden by the surgeon.
One drain is left in at the end of surgery. The drains should be emptied every eight hours and the output should be carefully measured in milliliters and recorded separately. This is because we remove the drains when the output is a certain amount. All drains are usually removed within two weeks after surgery.
We give patients a binder or compression garment which should be worn at all times for six weeks after surgery, unless in the shower.
Showers can be taken two days after surgery. Although the area can get wet, there can be no immersion of the wounds; that is no swimming or wading in pools, bath-tubs and other such activities. It is also important to not perform any strenuous activities. This limited activity level should be strictly followed for four to six weeks after the surgery is performed.
